I Tried The Diablo 4 Runewords Update

Sep 14 2024

MATTP545: People hate the generator spender gameplay.....Blizzard : "Lets force generator spender mechanics into runewords. This sounds like a fantastic idea"
Three60Mafia: they completely whiffed on the fact that D2 runes also had tons of passive effects and massive bonuses. Right now D4 are just resource-and-effect that dont do anything for you 99.9% of the time, it's a closed system that doesn't provide you with anything else - basically a disguised cooldown, an additional ability on additional cooldown. In D2 it always meant that a strong runeword was always best in slot for your gear/class because it also buffed your stats outside of the active skill. But these D4 runewords so far seem like a gimmick with really low pay offs. You're exchanging gimmicks that you use once every 20-30 seconds instead of stats that are always relevant and provide flat, constant bonuses.

Bad move so far on the runes. Maybe they should make that you can temper these runes, that way they actually have use outside of their active effect.
Or make it so that offering provides massive stats bonuses UNTIL you cash the offering points out with the active use, or make it so that power of the active rune skill scales with how much offering you saved up etc. I also understand that because we don't have that many slots in armor - they cant do complex multi-word runes... but then don't do them at all, damn it. Make gear with 4 slots really hard to come by. 2 slots you can craft sure, but then 2 natural slots that you can't craft, for a total of 4. That is the ultimate gear for ultimate rune words etc.
SenorCircuit: "Stand still for 6 seconds" is basically an eternity in a game like this. That's some pretty oblivious game design.
jonathanpaulo3852: When you make a game for everyone, you make a game for no one
imbalinzero5822: Runewords are a joke in diablo 4...
Jagernotty: They did more harm than good by calling this feature Runewords. Nothing is more damaging to your brand than hyping something with a memorable name then absolutely falling on your face with the implementation.
DoctorStrange01: Not even in the game yet, but already needs a complete rework :D Classic Blizzard. Literally had to copy D2's runewords which is what everyone wanted, but decided to go for something new that no one wants. Dumbasses.
mairovergara: These aren't runewords. This is just a new system that they are calling "runewords". All they had to do is implement the D2 runewords system, but for some reason they just aren't able to do obvious things.
Spinevane27: POE 2 it is
I've given up on Diablo 4. They didn't know what game they were making when they made it and revise it every season just as an mmo.
There's no story anymore. Its just a loot game with bad servers.
csimmeri: How many times are y’all going to let Blizzard disappoint you?
LuckyDuckie115: Yeah I think we're all waiting for POE2 arriving in November
BryanThePirate: "everyone is just going to end up using the same thing" can be applied to just about every system in Diablo 4; skills, glyphs, aspects, et al. Diablo 4 is a game where 'the illusion of choice' seems to be a formula the devs lean into, whether they realise it or not.
wheeze9378: its what i said, this is NOT runewords, this is simply fancy Gems... Try again blizzard ........
bjornolfactory9363: So the entire mechanic is built around my least favorite part of the game which is building/spending? Gross.
sabihrashid252: While I'm always in favor of adding new layers of complexity to the game, I do dislike how they took the name of one of the most iconic features in D2, and slapped on a new, less interesting system.
Wo00kie: I just hate that everything they are adding is just "do more damage or do more damage"
3nfy: "kinda boring" sums up d4.
circaen: The issue Blizzard have is they are trying to make an ARPG for people that do not enjoy what makes ARPG's great. They have removed all resistance, removed all complexity, & in doing so - removed all the pay off you get for accomplishing something. Their systems are designed with builds in mind, there is very little to discover. No campaign, straight into end game cheapens it. Every decision they have made has created a completely shallow experience.

But I do like the feel of combat.
jadessalazard: "When i first saw the runes in the campfire chat I was excited because I thought that they will offer some depth to the game"
My dude, you've been playing D4 for the last year. When did blizzard came up with ANYTHING remotely exciting for this game? Holy shit, unreal.
leechristensen3534: I feel like I could fix this game in two seconds:

1. Remove generator / spender, everyone has health and mana
2. Remove cooldowns
3. Introduce white socketed items for actual runewords
4. Remove main stat

I don't know why that would be so hard...
MrDavid01228: So, i said this on Raxx's video as well, but these are not "runewords". They are rune combos. You never get more than the listed effects of the runes, no matter what combination you use. Runewords in LoD grew beyond the base stats of the rune into having more powerful abilities. With the max amount of sockets on a piece of gear being 2 in D4 however, we will never see true Rune words, just crappy combos
TKRepository: D4 started as a joke but had potential. Now it's just a joke.
russelllapua4904: I get the impression these developers are like modern writers for established IPs (eg LOTR), trying to put their own stamp on it and absolutely failing at it. D2 already had runewords established and tuned over 2 decades. Just use some of them or tweak some of the others.

Honestly November can't come soon enough. I'm tired of this constant pushback we have to do between players and developers on this.
synitare3171: They really need to stop the whole "generator/spender" thing. It's not interesting, it's not fun. Nobody wants to play an ARPG to spam basic attacks or stand the fuck still.
MrSparkleYT: This is their last chance to save Diablo IV.
dystopiabeach: actual 1 idea dev team lmao
>need new seasonal mechanic
>recolor helltides
>add "runewords"
>it's just the generic, identical, sleep inducing builder-spender class resources in disguise

truly the height of AAA gaming
TheJakebriscoe: They were in a good place and then decided to fuck it all up
sterlingarcher5698: Just some suggestions:

Frozen enemies shatter and cauee aoe shrapnel, chilling aoe

Hydras fire nova periodically

Blood Nova becomes a giant blood golem fist

Minions turn into an enemy seeking, explosive shades at low life

Blood Nova can use corpses to charge fornwider aoe and trigger death novas in enemies.

Whirlwind can trigger chain hook

Leap can create Earthquakes and magma channels

Frenzy (edit) uses every weapon, 4 strike hit with increasing damage and aoe end.

Summoned Wolves become bears grant aura

Hurricane triggers magma channels and becomes fire

Vines bloom for hydralike plants spitting poison.

Rain of arrows lays traps
offgridgaminguk: Jonathan said it in a recent interview with ZiggyD, they take risks which is why they are successful. Blizzard play it safe, and safe is boring.
ThienNguyen-wh1fz: They shouldn’t have called it runewords
XDmGuy1: This is not what runewords are... just more proof that these developers lost the memo on what Diablo fans want.
Spongelebob: They delayed runewords from release just to end up with this unimaginative version of them? Damn
NokturnalMTG: How did the D2 devs design something way better with way less time, money, and tools? These are not rune words lol
Nerfunkal: The "best" interactions will be the short-lived "unintended" interactions...
